1. are any windows open?
2. is there a spare key available?
3. is it possible to slip or open the lock?
4. can you open the vehicle remotely or with an app?
5. walk around the car, are all of the doors locked?

With older vehicles, it may be possible to slip a coat hanger or a wire over the lock (see slipping locks).

Many newer vehicles have mobile apps that will allow the vehicle to be unlocked using your phone, for example the Ford Sync system allows the doors to be opened remotely.

Instead of using a car lockout service, some vehicles may allow for the vehicle to be opened using a coat hanger, wire or string.

In this technique the goal is to loop the door lock, grasp it and then pull up.

• wedge open the top of the door frame with a piece of wood or rubber
• create a hook or loop in the string or wire
• lower the hook or wire over the lock release
• pull up on the wire or string releasing the lock
